Just got back this weekend from an early morning visit to Elk Lake Dam. At first I was kind of thrown, because it has changed a bit since my last visit a few years ago. They have built a new bridge and rerouted the road slightly so it is easy to drive right past it and miss it.
They have torn down the bridge that basically sat over the dam and converted the small parking lot into a park. The dam is now in plain sight, although access to the steep banks below is now restricted by a fence. (This could be due to errosion problems or who knows what.) I arrived just ahead of sunrise on Sunday morning and there wasn't a person around, which adds to the creepy feeling you get. Now I wish I had brought my camera just to get some shots, even if nothing unusual showed up on them.
The whole time I was there, I felt as if I were walking around the grounds with another person. It's that kind of feeling you get when you know somebody is standing next to you. I kept turning around and expecting to see somebody, but there wasn't anybody else around at all. Strangest part of all was when I went to get back in my car, the leather in the passenger seat had the distinct contours of somebody sitting there!!!! Nobody was riding with me. Although I have been there before, I seldom want to stay for very long. I'm thinking next time of taking a recorder and a camera, just to see if anything happens. It is definitely an unusual place. Anybody else been there recently?

Where is Elk Lake Dam? Which area of the state? Curious... as this place sounds fascinating...

Elk Lake Dam is just across the Dunn County line west of Eau Claire. In Eau Claire you would take Clairemont Avenue heading roughly north west until you come to Cameron Avenue, (County E) turn left and head out of town. You will run into it about 3 miles out. It's not a particularly large lake. The first indicator you will have that you are approaching it is the road starts to head down a hill. Formerly it would bend sharply to the right and head over a bridge. The Elk Lake Dam was under this bridge. Apparently "Mary" had been seen on this old bridge as well. That has changed. The bridge is no longer there.
Sometime in the last couple of years, they built a new bridge downstream and this former road is now more of a spur into a small park which offers a clear view of the dam. A tall fence now discourages "wandering" down to the stream below the dam, where many of the sightings have been reported, although I didn't see any "no trespassing" sign in the park itself. I would imagine that you could skirt around the fence and negotiate the steep drop to the stream below, but it could be a bit dangerous if you take a spill. I noticed that there is a lot of "clutter" and rubble from the removal of the old bridge and apparently an old powerhouse from an earlier dam. Venturing down to that part is not something I would do alone, or without telling somebody of my whereabouts. The area has houses, but was very quiet any time I have been there.
Hope this helps. If you go, please share your experiences. There are a lot of places that are "hyped," but I truly believe there IS something to the legend of Elk Lake Dam. I don't necessarily think Mary is going to come out of the water to share your cookies with you, but you will most likely get a strong feeling of being followed..........and not by a neighbor keeping an eye on you either.
I know most of the regulars always respect the rights of property owners, but to the idle readers I would encourage the same. I'd hate to have this area cut off to investigations or visitors because somebody annoyed the area residents.

I have heard the screams at the dam so I know what you mean. They were very faint but I heard them. As far as places you've been before. I know that just because you don't experience anything doesn't mean that someone hasn't before. Ghost sightings and experiences are rare if the were common I don't think they would be a phenomenon, it would be fact.

I lived there for little under a year in the little green cottage on the corner. any questions just ask away. I used to have a 1957 Cadillac Coupe de Ville in the garage. I loved that place. The breeze going through the windows, the sounds of bird chirping in the air, the sounds of water going over the dam, the sounds of water flowing in my basement after a downfall of rain, the sounds of motorcycles, cars, rv's, dump trucks, occasional speeder fleeing with police sirens going full blast, and not to forget the fire trucks looking for the fire. Then they tore down the old bridge, basically ruined what was original or authentic put that new bridge in which makes like you said pass it by when there is something peaceful there. later

i used to live on the side of the dam where the 3 houses are on the left before the corner & the one on the lake, i used to live in the green house on the corner with the garage, i loved it there, the owner of the house wanted too much for it so i had to move, i go there once in awhile.
