My friend that took these pictures with me went back to Governor Nelson yesterday. He said that there is now a jawbone on the alter. He was not positive what type of animal the jaw came from but he said it had sharp teeth and if he had to guess it was a fox. That would fit with the whole native american theory, I think...

fox happens to be my totem animal. The natives would use bones of an animal but not the flesh.

I visit Governor's Island almost every day. I've watched the Pagan/Wiccan altar morph over the last couple months. It's had numerous offerings that have come and gone. Recently there was what appeared to be a squirrel skull placed in the middle of the second tier. It disappeared after the altar was destroyed by vandals. I've noticed the altar to be toppled one day then standing again the next day is if it never had been touched. Today I saw a deer antler had been placed on the bottom tier. I hope this offering brings greater protection to the altar. For the most part it seems as though people a respecting the altar and it's offerings. Let's hope it stays that way....

My advice to you is to never go back. They probably know that you're looking around back there...and if I were you: Do not, I repeat, do not keep going back there. Don't let anybody else go back there either...it is a very bad idea to be sniffing around by a Witch Altar. You're better off just staying as far as way as possible.

sniffing around a witch altar is a bad idea , its not polite to interfere with someones sacred space. But if it is a witch altar , theres more than like no harm done, you would n't want to harm something.

I never touched it or messed with it at all. I only took the photos to show it was there. We pretty much came to the conclusion that it is Native American. I would never do anything to alter the alter. I have not been back since I took these photo but I am not scared to look at it. It is only about 30 feet off the path and I feel that if they didn't want to share it they would have put it in a more discreet location.
