I have pictures of orbs in different sizes from several haunted places in and around Milwaukee, WI, using a 35mm camera with 400 and 800 speed. Does anyone have a reason why orbs are of various sizes?
I would think that some spirits cannot manifest 100%, or that small orbs are of children and larger ones are adults...again depending on where the pix were taken.
Does anyone have a theory on this? Your insight would be helpful.
Thank you much, Carol

In almost every case (99.99%) I would say that any orb that is caught on any camera should attributed to dust/pollen/moisture etc. The dust is extremely close to the lens of the camera (Just far enough away that it is illuminated by the flash) size is generally determined by distance from the lens and the amount of reflective surface effected by the flash.
I am not saying that the locations are not haunted, just that orbs are generally not evidence of such. IMO.

THough if the orb is radiating its own light i'd say it was something more then just dust specks or bugs next time use a camcorder it may give you a better view of what you think may be a ghost, if you can ge your hands on one.

I have several pictures taken with 35mm film that have tons of dust particles, bugs, etc., some taken inside and others outside. Forty plus years of taking pix makes me more than an amateur. Pix taken inside showing round "balls" and nothing else floating about on film and shot in haunted places is a real indicator of orbs. Again, a voice activated tape recorder placed on steps near a "swing" door had the sound of that door creaking open. Film developed showed an orb about 3 feet off the ground.
Another picture had several orbs of various sizes in a stairwell. No other people in the building. I also felt the presence of several spirits all around.
Not on the defensive here, but I know orbs from dust, etc. I have one particular picture shot outside with dust, bugs, etc., yet there was something following me and that also is on film. Most of these pix were shot at the Modjeska Theatre in Milwaukee. The outside shot was where I walk my neighbor's dog. During Xmas, I took pix of the Xmas lights at Miller Brewery. I have snow and some dust/bug particles on those pictures, yet there is also a very strange "tiki" doll figure captured on one shot. This was taken in front of the old house on the hill, decorated with blue lights. There is no figure whatsoever in the car. Just strange...don't think that one is paranormal but nonetheless, very stange.
The point being, why ARE orbs of various sizes? Never read anything on that. Some are so small one almost needs a magnifying glass to see them, while still others are enormous...some in different colors as well such as some pix I took at the Oriental Theatre last year while doing an investigation. I have looked over thousands of pix in my time, and orbs are orbs....just like dust, pollen, bugs are just that!
Also, I have been on pevious investigations with people using digital and camcorders. Again, they have gotten orbs as well as my 35mm pictures at the time. I just prefer 35mm film as you do get negatives although the other two have instant results.

I understand what you are saying, and I am not trying to convince you otherwise, but I have never, at any time seen any orb picture that in my opinion was anything but environmental. (And I too have reviewed thousands) So, my previous explanation of the size of orbs is the one I will stick with. Anyway, I did come across a few articles that hypothesized that the size of spirit orbs are reflective of either the amount of energy available to the spirit or the wavelength that the spirit emits energy, but I didn't find anyone who claimed to have the definitive theory on the subject.

Thank you so much for the research on orb size...really appreciate it. And you know, that makes real sense........spiritual energy projection. So simple. Here's another one for anyone interested on that subject. Does size matter (lol)?
Seriously, though, would an orb size indicate a less active spirit, a new one or, even a "dying" one? I don't want to talk this to death, so to speak, but it makes one wonder.
Again, thank you!

I think depending on the number and sizes depends on the energy in a given area. Personal opinion. If you can sence them close your eyes take a deep breathe before taking a pic and try to picture what the person or persons may have looked like. Its helped me a lot what sucks though is now i see ghost almost all the time now when i focus like that. It may help you differentiate between latent energy and actual spiritual energy?? Just a thought

I think that it doesnt matter about size but the power each spirit holds. On top of all that it depends weather it's a good or bad spirit in place or time that the orbs r being scene mostly evil spirits gain power from their preys fear.

With the utmost respect for yours and others views on the significance of orbs. There is not any significant evidence that orbs have anything whatsoever to do with the paranormal. I agree with fbnstephen's assessment that 99.99% of the orbs captured on film are nothing more than dust, pollen, or moisture.
With that said, I think it is possible that in the .01% of those cases where people have captured those orbs that do give off their own light if you will are actually witnessing a rare occurrence that happens naturally, and that is ball energy or ball lightening. There have been reported instances where in certain environmental conditions, people have witnessed these balls of light and have actually watched them move and disappear. Is there a correlation with these balls of energy and supposedly haunted locations? If you believe that spirits, ghosts, or whatever you want to call it are energy based, then it would stand that there might be some associated factor. This has never been proved to be the case, but it is an accepted scientific fact that energy cannot be destroyed, it only takes on the form of some other energy. (A layman's understanding) If you have been on an investigation and for no reason all of your equipment's batteries are drained at the same time, this would make one reason there is a force near that is drawing in that energy. The big question is; what is that force?
Unfortunately, there have been too many so-called paranormal investigators out there that put too much stock into orbs and their significance. I have yet to see any significant evidence that proves to me orbs are paranormal in nature. I have tons of photographs that show orbs of all sizes and colors, but none are paranormal, and they were taken in a place that does have documented paranormal activity. I also have tons of photographs that I have taken in places where there is no claimed paranormal activity and have walked away with orbs of all sizes and colors.
Please don't get me wrong, I do respect others ideas on the paranormal, but so far, there has been no evidence to support orbs as paranormal.

I fully agree with mark, that's why pictures are so faulty, no offence to any one, but seriously it's much better to have another way of documenting than a camera, again no offence ment.

I need to respond to the last two individuals. With 30+ years of ghost hunting, investigations and research under my belt, I am no amateur. I walk into the unknown, always open minded, and always protected.
A spirit will manifest itself in whatever shape or form, no matter what time of day or night, whether it's an orb, mist, shadow person or ? depending on the energy it needs to materialize. This has been written about many times. When one has evidence (orbs) on 35mm film, camcorder and digital camera all taken at the same time, the room temperature drops and suddenly an icy, death chill goes right through your body, I would say that this is more than enough evidence that the place is haunted, especially with recorded EMFs.
This has happened on several investigations I've been on. I do agree that the ghost hunting world is over saturated, and that some people rely only on orbs as evidence. I also analize every bit of evidence collected. I do, however, stand firm that orbs CAN be spirits, but no, not 100% of the time. That goes the way of bugs, pollen, pollution, etc.
Also, when doing an investigation, I get very strong feelings if a place is haunted...call it the sixth sense...had it since I was 10 years old. I do close my eyes and "picture" what has happened there and about the spirit (s). But to close my eyes before I take a picture; NO WAY. Wouldn't want to miss a good shot! ---Carol---

True I do agree that there is a lot of crap about orbs what i wish is that there was more concret evidance in them so it was known if they were spirit energy or just junk in the air. I suppose that's the one thing about ghosts I've always been skeptical about, everything else I know from experiance is real.

my theory on it is that the size of the orb depends on how much energy it has drawn from the environment around it. Maybe a smaller orb is a spirit that doesn't enough energy to manifest as a full apparition or a shadow person? I don't know how accurate that point of view is, but its just my own idea on it.

Wouldn't want to miss a good shot! ---Carol--- Carol, With all due respect to your approach and many years devoted to ghost hunting, we obviously approach the field of paranormal research from opposing philosophies. What I am about to say is not intended to disrespect your views or thoughts and make light of your views. It is simply my thoughts about two divergent thoughts when it comes to paranormal research and I am sure that if you have been in this field for 30+ years you know this rift better than anyone. I would just like you or someone out there to provide me with your evidence that orbs are related to paranormal activity. You stated that your evidence is orbs, I must respectfully disagree with that statement that an orb is evidence. The reason I say this is I can go right now in my own home and take an orb picture that can be explained as dust. Therein lies the problem with orbs, they can and are recreated at any time in any location. I also cannot and would not accept your feelings that you thought the location is haunted or spirits are near when you took the photograph. Now if you could document on video an orb floating around that transforms itself into an apparition and back again, I will eat my words and be a strong proponent of orbs, and shout it to the world orbs are paranormal in nature. You would have then provided some supporting evidence of a possible correlation between orbs and the paranormal. I don't care what you think you see in your mind's eye or what you feel. That is not evidence and there is no way to document those feelings. I am not saying I have not had weird feelings during an investigation and then we capture a spike on the EMF meter, but that does not provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt that it was paranormal, it simply could be that we were exposed to high EMF and were reacting to it. Don't get me wrong, I have seen shadow people and have experienced disembodied voices that were captured on audio. We have also captured wires moving on video and we were unable to debunk the movement. Could this be paranormal activity? Those instances that me or the team I am on cannot debunk them, then yes. At least we have not found reasonable explanations yet. I do believe that differing forms of energy floating through the vastness of space can and does affect us at different times, and yes can be construed as a paranormal experience. I think there needs to be much more study in this area to fully understand the correlation. If you were to pin me down right now, I would say that energy does have something to do with our pursuit. I might be a skeptic, but I am a skeptic that believes there is something out there that is unexplainable. But, I try very hard not to make claims without providing hard evidence to back it up. This is all that I ask of others who make claims about the paranormal. Show me your evidence.
