A subject that I have been meaning to bring up in discussing on this site for some time is that of the incubus or succubus also known as sleepers, ghost lovers, or for some even demons or aliens.
A little background on the subject is that people, one of which I will tell you about, experience visits during the night while they are sleeping from some unexplained being. Simply, they either experience a feeling that something is walking, sitting on, or shaking their bed or that someone is pushing down on top of them or even sexually assaulting them. Sometimes this feeling is joined with vision of dark objects in the room or in the bed with them. These visits can be once or continual.
Science explains this phenomenon as a problem called sleep paralysis. It happens to people who are about to wake from sleep and realize they can’t move, speak, or cry out. It can last a few seconds or longer. The brain produces a hormone that basically keeps us from acting out during our REM cycle while our bodies are dreaming and this paralysis happens when the hormone doesn’t dissipate before we are actually awake. Of course this freaks people out and nearly 40% of the population has felt this.
I myself have woke up yelling or crying with a feeling that I was unable to wake but I never have felt terrified for more than a second and no other phenomenon was associated with this and I usually don’t remember what I was upset about.
My grandmother told me a story once that I will never forget.
she was sleeping one night and woke to a feeling of the side of her bed sinking down like someone was sitting there. Her room was on the front of the house so the street light shown in on the bed verifying her feeling that something was causing the bed to sink down right next to her. She instantly felt the presence of evil and said she stated out loud very aggressively, “Get thee Devil away from me!” and then started repeating the lords prayer (she was Catholic). The bed lifted and the presence left and did not return. She was 70 when she told me this and I was only 10, not a story you tell a child but she was pretty religious so she must have thought it was a normal thing to explain. She died a few years later but I wish I could have discussed this event with her when I was an adult.
There are many different stories about this out on the web and I have a few more that are similar I have gathered in discussions over the years. Please share if you or you known someone this has happened to or if you have more information of any kind to add. I fully believe that something, what ever you want to call it does haunt people in this way and it can’t be simply a hormone in our brains.
