Hey Yeti, Great topic, as I really like the idea of people and creatures being shape shifters. Although I haven’t had a specific case of this in Wisconsin, maybe this topic will prompt someone into sharing his or her experiences and thoughts on shape shifting.

Yes, you are correct that shape shifting is a technique used by some Native American shamans.
Shamanism happens to be my field of study. For further information on the techniques of shape shifting, I would recommend the following sources:
"Shape Shifting: Shamanic Techniques for Global and Personal Transformation" by John Perkins.
"Secrets of Shamanism: Tapping the Spirit Power Within You" by Jose Stevens, Ph.D. and Lena S. Stevens, pg. 61.
"Shamanism as a Spiritual Practice for Daily Life" by Tom Cowan, pg. 202.
"Urban Shaman: A Handbook for Personal and Planetary Transformation Based on the Hawaiian Way of the Adventurer" by Serge Kahili King, Ph.D., pg. 148.
"Fire in the Head: Shamanism and the Celtic Spirit" by Tom Cowan, pg. 28.
"Witchcraft and the Shamanic Journey" by Kenneth Johnson, pg. 100.
"The Celtic Shaman: A Handbook" by John Matthews, pg. 56.

The Ridgeway Phantom was believed to be a shape shifter. Different people viewed the phantom as different things from a ball of light to an animal.
