Has anyone ever heard a story about a little boy who would follow a circus elephant down Farwell St. in Eau Claire (from the Eau Claire River to the Old Circus grounds in the 3rd ward) when the circus would come to town every year? (circle 1900 ish) Apparently the story says the elephant died in Eau Claire one year and the boy really took its death hard, and to this day on a quiet night you can hear the boy crying.

I've never heard about the boy, but the elephant is indeed a legend. The elephant is buried on the Eastside Hill, somewhere near Margaret and Emery Streets.
An old-timer brought a video to a neighborhood meeting last fall and had footage of the circus train pulling into town near where banbury place is, crawling over the "S" bridge to the SooLine depot (across from the library). The circus then detrained and made their way up Main Street.
Where are the "old circus grounds" in the Third Ward?
I'll try to find out if someone knows more info on the elephant...
