Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but I posted here instead of the other forum so other WI forumites would read it.
I decided to register for this site cause it seems many of you are from the Eau Claire area. I had an experience when I was a 3rd grader at my family's old house on Maxon Street. I typed this up for ForteanTimes.com years ago under the "It Happened to Me" section of their website. That section is now defunk, but they did move my story to their forum: www.forteantimes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5790
Paranormal things have been happening to me all of my life, sometimes I wonder if I perhaps "attract" these sort of incidents. Many of them are interesting, but most of the time I wish they hadn't happened. One of the most vivid and undeniable things that happened to me was my ghost sighting.
I was in the third grade, I don't know what year but I was born in 1979, so in the mid eighties some time. We lived in a house on Maxon Street in Eau Claire, Wisconsin which was right next to Lincoln Elementary, my school. I shared a room with my older brother, this room was rather small and had two windows(one by his bed, one by mine)...
The story is unfinished and the link they had to the rest of it is broken, but here's what I saw:
A young mid-late 20's - early 30's African American woman standing in front of my bedroom door (the door was closed). She appeared to be wearing a hat (hazy memory, but 75% sure). She was also wearing a summer dress. One thing I remember clearly is that she was very attractive. She just stood there looking down at me. I didn't feel as if she meant me any harm, but nonetheless I was scared.
I asked my brother if I could hop into his bed after about 10 minutes of her just looking at me. He mumbled OK, he was half asleep already. I jumped into his bed and thought I must've been seeing things. I then looked out the window and saw nothing, then looked back at the spot she was at and there she was again, this time she had turned so she could look at me since I changed my position in the room. I closed my eyes and hid behind my brother for the rest of the night.
It was probably the single most memorable event of my childhood.
Here's how she appeared: first I'd see the top of her head, then hair and face, then shoulders and then the rest of the body. Though she was not transparent, she was opaque and looked like a cardboard cutout (2 dimensional). It was as if I saw her like a waterfall, first seeing the top then flowing to the bottom. I didn't see any feet, she appeared to float, but didn't move up or down, she was still. The dress she was wearing had flowers on it and she had a medium bob haircut. From that description I would say she was from the 40's-50's?
I was hoping that by posting it in the WI section of the forum, someone from Eau Claire who knew the history of the area could fill me in on any role Eau Claire history pertaining to African Americans. I know Hank Aaron played baseball here maybe during that time period, but can't think of anything else. Also the population of African Americans in Eau Claire is very very small.
I don't think about my sighting a lot, but do wonder now and then why she "visited" me. It was the only time during our 5-6 years in that house that I saw anything. We only stayed there for 1 more year after I saw her and then moved to Menomonie.
Though I didn't really experience any other undisputable paranormal phenomena there, several creepy things stand out about the house.
1. There was a large hole in the basement with a separate room at the foot of the stairs that had been bricked up. There was however a large hole through that wall and in through the hole was another room littered with insulation and old broken toys.
2. One of my younger brothers had seizures for about 2 years while we were there. He was probably around 6-8 years old. He was also very sickly and had many fevers during the few years he had seizures. When he would have a fever he'd scream wildly saying there were ghosts everywhere in the house looking at him and the rest of the family.
