i don't know much about banshees, but are you sure it wasn't some kind of injured animal? they can sound like they are screaming sometimes. one the other hand, maybe your right, and you did see a banshee. was it dark out? could you see what you were hearing?

Banshees are not restricted to just Ireland, but all over. The legend anyways. It may have been started in Ireland, but they did sail to England and the main land of Europe, and did tell stories of them. But its not just restricted to that part of the world. But like aldrea18 said, it could have been an injured animal or something. I've heard an injured animal before, and it sounds like a child screaming (well some of them do anyways) but its really loud and very nerve wracking.

Creatures aren't restricted to one part of this world, unless they need a specific climate. About the injured animal theory... it's VERY possible that acounts of hearing a banshee is mistaking the sound of an injured animal for a banshee. I say this because I had a traumatizing experience when my mom accidentally hit a dog. It was a pit bull mix and it was late at night, a guy was walking two dogs while on his BIKE with NO LEASHES. Stupid to do such a thing, at NIGHT of all time, I know, but that's not the point of this story. Anyway, so the tires didn't go over the dog (if they did, I would have gotten sick..) but it got hit by the bumper in the side, likely hitting it's head and back, if not its entire body. It went under the car, and it was still alive when we went over it, because no sooner had we hit it, the poor thing SCREAMED. Honestly, it did sound unnatural, like you could never hear that sound come from a DOG of all things. Here's the best way I can describe it... think of tires screeching as a car turns; not that high-pitched squeal, but an actual burning rubber, skidding type of screech. Now combine that with painful moaning sounds as if someone was getting whipped or branded with a hot iron. That's what it sounded like, and it wasn't pleasant to hear it. (I'm a huge animal lover so I was beat up about it) I swear, to this day, I can't get that sound out of my head. I don't even know if the poor thing made it; but that's not the topic, so I won't go far into that. To get to the point, animals make VERY strange and practically unrealistic sounds when they're in excrutiating pain. This is why I'm not positive if I believe in banshees or not, as I've never actually SEEN one or heard ANY personal encounters other than hearing their voice. Which is why I always come to the conclusion it's more than likely an animal. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they CAN'T exist, I'm just keeping my opinion to a "Won't believe it til I see it" basis. I prefer to have solid evidence before believing anything.

I agree with Depsycho. And I honestly do feel the same way, because its all been a heard thing not a seen.
