As I was driving home from work on Thursday morning at about 1:00 AM, I witnessed what appeared to be a falling star. What was unusual was that it had a long tail that made it look like a comet. It was moving quickly from east to west at about a 45 degree angle. Does anybody have an explaination for this?

Falling stars are just space rocks that get cought up in our atmosphere and burn up to to their speed that cause intense friction. Depending on the composition of the meteor, it can appear with short or long trail of sparks and or of slightly varying colors.

I agree with Souldrifter, sorry feel weird for saying that. It might not have been a falling star at all. As a matter of fact we would all be dead if a star really did fall into our atmosphere. They are thousands of degrees in heat and would quickly burn through our atmosphere and like I said kill everyone. The same would happen if a meteor that is big enough struck the earth. It had to have been a meteor or a peice of space junk that got caught in our atmosphere and was burning up as it fell. Chances are it never hit the ground.

Oh! There was a meteor shower just recently, that could easily be what you saw.
