Chad... it was MOTEL Hell, in Manitowoc outskirts... not Hotel Hell (in Maribel) that has the fire reoccuring (supposidely) on Halloween under a full moon...
Last year, Hotel Hell/Maribel caught fire. Again.
As for this place, I thought there was a (non-traditional) family living there yet...
Our daily paper has yet to arrive.
Edit: Gah, this happened on Saturday, and this is the first I read or heard of it... I guess I have been a little busy and have not read the daily papers. Unsure if anything was in it, probably, guessing.

No problem... I used to work so close to the place, around Halloween I would see the traffic going there as I was on my way home from my evening job...
Due to wishing to boycott a place with a big crowd like that, I chose to not go. Now I am almost wishing I went, just to see the place.
Years ago, I think that was the same place a lady lived (not sure if it is the same one) with many, many dogs. The dogs were neglected, and I think one of the dogs bit a child bad... it was in the news for a while, as I think the child was her grand daughter? Unsure, as it was 10+ years ago...

Sorry to interupt the thread, Are you saying that the Maribel Hotel has had yet another fire now? We usually head that way in the summer to walk the trail's etc, Just for something to do and see. The last time I was near the Hotel we had walked up the trail that will bring you pretty close to the back of the Hotel, The place send's chill's down my spine, As well as the person that live's right next door to the hotel.
In the past we have had some friends go there and actually, somehow get inside. Although that was year's ago now, The secruity of the hotel now seems to be a lot more tight. I have alway's been intrested in knowing why the building still remain's today? I love the old place but why have they kept it up for this long? Is there plans on re-storing it one day perhaps?

No, CRX -- Chad's link was for MOTEL HELL in Manitowoc. Not Hotel Hell in Maribel (The old Maribel Caves Hotel). Click on the link, see the picture and read the article he is providing above. Also -- Maribel Caves Hotel is with a cedar fence. No trespassing. No one is allowed past the fence, and the family lives close and monitor things often. It's not worth it, to trespass. The building remains are not looking that safe... to be in. That means when I go there, I stand by the fence and stare... from a few different places near by. I love looking at the place. I even remember it from the mid-70's, when it looked oh-so-different... Edit: The last fire at Hotel Hell (Maribel) was about a year ago... Thank You, Lady. I rushed right past that and didn't bother to look at the link! That'll teach me. (heheh) ..... I would be no mean's Tresspass on any property! I just know that year's ago some people somehow got themselve's inside the Hotel. The last time we were that way walking the trail, we stopped to the front of the Hotel in the car-Then there was a orange snow fence up. Im not sure if that is still there or not? Oh, Man! I wish I knew what it looked like back in the 70's! More in-tact I assume? How cool that you got to see it like that. Do you know what might of caused the fire that you mentioned above a year ago?

sure, CRX -- I think it was a family member burning garbage? And it got out of control... a few fire departments were called in...
If one only knew how I used to go out of my way to park in front and stare...
Years ago, I found a way to get up to the back side, and due to how the yellow tapes were, I was technically trespassing... I would walk and walk... and then when I was near, I would walk closer... and stare. What was really strange (this will go back to about late August, 2004 I believe -- I would take pics of my kids in front of the back of the building (as to not be visible from the road side). My best friend's mom was along as well... she took a few pics of the kids and I. A few days later, the first day of school -- I took pics of the kids, the traditional pics that one takes of their children on the first day of school, you know? And then pics once they were at school (yes, I go overboard with taking pics). And then I realized that for as many pics as what was taken at Hotel Hell the day or two before, I should have had to change film. So... I looked at the camera and there were still pics left, unexplosed. I did the rewinding of the film while it was in the camera, had it developed, and... nothing from Hotel Hell with us. Only a few of the distant shot. It was really strange. I checked with Wal*Mart One Hour, and... they did not delete anything at all. Nothing was double exposed. Zapped forever. This was beyond strange, and all done with a conservative 35mm camera (with some frills, and about 15 years old at the time) -- not digital. To this day it puzzles me...
So with my more recent visits -- I stand in the ditch and stare, and wonder... back in the 20's and 30's -- what type of cars would have drove up, let the ladies out, where did they park... was there some type of band playing (and I am not getting things mixed up with the Titanic!!). How did the people dress. What types of homes did they have... where were they from. Was Al Capone really there at some point, for real? And not just supposed?
I just stand and stare and wonder and dream...

What an intresting story Lady, That would baffle me as well. How strange....Hmmmm. And Thank You for the information about the fire as well. Now that you mention yourself just sitting there, staring, and wondering. You have me thinking as well! It would be intresting to know what kind of people were there, etc. Would there be any picture's somewhere in Archieve's that one could dig up?? Newspaper's something like that, I wonder? I had also heard that Al Capone was there, Hiding out at some point. I have also know for fact that he was in the Hillsboro area as well, Hiding in a remote Cabin near where my Great Grandfather's Mink Ranch once was. So I would believe easily that he was once at the Hotel. I definatly think this coming Spring we will head that way to take another peek....It's alway's such a intresting place to see, And the trail's are nice to hike on as well.

The cedar fence was taken down when the county started putting in the pipeline that runs along county road R. I cant say if it was put back up or not, but last time I was there was sometime this last November (I cant remember the exact date) and the fence had not been placed back up yet. The ditch is gone now too! Much of the dirt dug up for the pipeline was placed onto the property, making a downward slanted hill starting from the road, down to just a few feet away from the fountain in front of the hotel.
I remember last year talking to the nephew of the owner and he was telling me about plans of setting controlled fires in order of burning off the remains of the interior of the hotel. (he said it would be cheaper than gutting it out by hand) I haven't talked to him since then so I wonder if this wasn't the fire that your speaking of? Who knows, even controlled fires get out of control sometimes. The last I heard, they still have plans for rebuilding the interior, but as of now, they just don't have the funds.

I think Leapin is right -- it was controlled and got out of hand (I think).
What I really liked was the flowers that were planted in the front... here there was this old run down hotel, a drive way you could barely guess where people parked... and then awesome and bright flowers in a circle... I think they were a fuschia/pinkish-purple. The first time I drove up and saw that I was so surprised!

I know this post is not about the fire, but it's snowing heavily right now, and I have the mad urge to drive there, and see what it looks like from the ditch-view, as it heavily snows...
Instead I am home, sick... it's been a long week...

I went passed the hotel a few days ago and it looks as if the interior has been completely gutted out. The building is now just a shell, but a beautiful shell to say the least. The grounds are still kept up and kept mowed. I am only about 5 minutes from the site and pass by it quite a bit on my way to Devil's River.
