Around mid-November, 2009, three of us had permission to do an investigation of the Iron Horse Hotel in Milwaukee, WI. We started in the sub-basement, where I left a regular tape recorder with 60 minutes on it. We then were shown the room being renovated into a soaking tub/jacuzzi area. This is the old boiler room. I immediately felt like there had been a fight which resulted in death by stabbing with a knife. This involved three guys; two holding the victim until he was dead. Our guide could not tell us anything about this area. Even the large dirt pit was ready to have the foundation pored, and I felt very strongly that human bones would be unearthed here. Pictures were taken.
We then were shown the first haunted room on the second floor. Guests have heard tapping on windows and footsteps walking across the room. When we entered this room, it felt like we were invading someone's privacy. I even asked our tour guide if this room had ever been an office way back when....I felt like someone of importance had once occupied this space and was trying to gain someone's attention outside on the ground level by knocking on the window. Our guide could not answer that question.
Next, we walked down the hallway to another haunted area. Again our guide let us into another room where voices have been heard. This room faces west and it seemed we "imposed" on people that were working there....from another time. In the far northwest corner, an old elevator shaft has been bricked over. Former employees have been injured and several repairs have been made to this elevator.
The third room we checked out was on the 6th floor, again facing west. A construction worker was pushed by unseen hands when the hotel was going through renovations just over a year ago. I felt like there had been someone's son or nephew that worked there with him, decades ago, and this boy/man (mentally challenged) did not know his own strength, thus playing but actually pushing this worker. Once again, pictures were taken.
After the investigation, pictures were developed (35mm film) and the tape was listened to. In all 3 haunted rooms and the sub-basement boiler room, we had orbs. The largest one was in the boiler room. The EVP captured in the sub-basement had what sounded like motorcycle engines revving up, and then you can here a guy saying"Turn it off man." Another EVP had a woman singing, which could have been an employee, and again, the sound of motorcycle engines revving up.
The funny thing was that there weren't any motorcycles in this sub-basement nor outside.
Upon further research from the City Development office downtown, I found out that the second floor had a small office area for the owner back in the 1920s, and orders were shouted to employees outside. The windows on the first floor facing east were once overhead doors for deliveries. Over the decades, the place went through other renovations including two large offices occupying the second floor. The elevator shaft from the 6th floor to the basement had many permits for repairs, plus a dumb waiter was enlarged. Previous workers have been hurt.
No record of a fight in the old boiler room, but one of the guy's involved with the fight was named Lincoln. Research is being done on this. I also need to find out if any bones have been unearthed.
The hotel has ghosts of the past, plus there in a Native American Indian woman who haunts the grounds outside and her picture, they say, is on one wall of the sub-basement. It's suppose to change in appearance with the seasons. This could be due to humidity and cold. Decades ago she helped other Indians traveling west with food and shelter.
Very interesting hotel including its history of a former mattress/bedding factory, warehouse and storage space for Coakley Brothers.
