That is funny I lived about 8 miles from the Ed Gien home and know where it is Plainfield ,Wis I also actually knew some people who had close incounters with the man.A store owner right in the town all... I know is that dude should never come back this way ever again..There is stories of stuff that is still left there ect....It is weird even to go past the place.Any way My home was Spiritland..corners store and grave yard is still there and he did get stuff from the grave yard supposedly when the grave yard was across the street going towards highway 51 now 39.That corner should be a historical site because it was a meeting grounds for a cult type doing way back in the 1700's or 1800's The County Court house is a place to get info on Eddy..And maybe some interviews with some residents might be a fun thing to do...The county now owns the land there and my folks are both gone...But the history is still there also by the way if you want good food stop at the resturant just around the coner it has new owners but the food is great. And the corner eatery on corner of 73 and highway BB has great food and good stories too.The owner fo that eatery baught the house across the street and while remodeling found a jar with in the basement wall ..a gold nugget of over 6 hundred thosand dallars or so..The recent owner did not have familly and deid and he got the doe...Cool ha..There is a lot out there for the finding you just have to do the investigating. His place is very nice and he still has good investment going. My brother and sster lives down there and I frequent this area a lot.Eds home now gone is located going from corner 51/ BB towards wisconsin Rappids about 7-8 miles or so from highway 51/39. the story mostly evold around his mother it was said.

I do not think eddy had any relitives..his neighbors always said he was a nice guy..He was very intelligent living on his own back in the woods..Lived on the earth goods sort of..Untill I guess he went bizerk and thats how people started to find things that seemed strange..I guess some guy went back there and found his mom body in the house at the head of the table....This guy done some realy wierd stuff. We only found out about this after my folks baught the store...People would come in and tell us about him. That was years after he was caught and sent to prison..He died there I guess. There are a lot of people in the area that knew him...most are probably gone now, because of the time factor past.Go to the library and find articles about him..maybe advertise in the Almond/Plainfield news paper that you want some witnesses or people who new him for the movie...Even the Police might have some old infoe they can generate for your files..Internet will have information and histoical society of Stevens Point might also.

I know he was transferred and died at Mendota in Madison, so that might be a start. My dad briefly met him sometime in the 60's. My dad was naughty once then, and did a year in the Waupun prison. He was in the dentist's office, and was seated next to Ed in the waiting room. My dad said that even the prisoners in the "insane" building (also in Waupun) were sent to the same dentist. he said he didn't recognize him, and they made small talk. He said Ed seemed very normal and not much of a talker, but did make conversation with him. My dad said he introduced himself to Ed sometime during their conversation, and that's when Ed introduced himself to my dad. My dad told me he didn't even know how to react, since everyone has heard of him, but he didn't put the name with the face at the time. My dad is the only person I know that had anything to do with Ed. If he has any family, I'm sure they didn't stick around the area.

I have a cousin who was a prison guard for either that prison or one along I-39 known as 51..Maybe she would know she was doing that back when he was still alive...That sounds kind of spooky..I don't know what I would have done if I would have met up with ed.

My ex-husband is a guard at Columbia, which is the one in Portage on I 39. It is also where Dahmer was at. I do know that in Waupun they have the main prison, the farm, and they also have a separate facility that is for the criminally insane, so if your cousin was working in that facility in the 60's, that would be a good source. I do not know when Gein was set to Mendota though, I'm guessing it would've been in either the late 70's or early 80's right before he died in 84.

It was in the 80s she worked in the prison...I am not sure which one...A man I worked with in Abbotsford,WI was in the prison she worked at...I guess he was there becuase he robbed a home with his girl freind..when I asked him if he knew her and he gave me a discrpition of her ..That was her..and he siad she would kick anybodies but..Because she was built like a weight lifter.....Oh yes!!This is kind of weird he got fired and after that there was that bank burglrey in Medford ?and they said there was a bike they found they think may have been part of the burglery...Funny thing...He rode a bike and talked about stuff all the time..he still had stuff ,guns ect...and stuff from his last robbery that the cops never knew about....Now maybe they will! and what a co-insidence of that infoe ha?I won't point a finger at anything that is the Police job.Everyone where I worked could not believe the stuff this guy would talk about...I guess he wanted to be a star?what ever!

Richard, E-mail me the info you want at kkpublications@yahoo.com and I will forward it to my good friend who worked on Ed Gein's ward at Central State Hospital in Waupun from 1968-1975. Gein was indeed transferred to Mendota Mental Health Institute in Madison approx late 1978-early 1979. The realson for this was Central State Hospital was closed and converted to part of what is now Dodge Correctional Institution in Waupun. Central State was the maximum security psychiatric hospital up until that time, but after the closing the patients were all sent to Goodland Hall at Mendota. Female max patients, who were never housed at Central State, for it was an all male facility remain at Winnebago Mental Health Institute. Gein remained at Mendota until he died in 1984.At Central State, Gein was a model patient, and even worked in the hospital as a trustee, which is a patient who is on honor status and performs duties with hospital staff, such as landscaping and minor carpentry while recieving a menial wage.My friend thingy is a wealth of knowledge regarding Ed, and I would be happy to put you in contact with him.

I knew Ed when I was a child. He used to frequent my father's service station in the Wisconsin Rapids area. He was very nice to me and bought me candy. I used to get excited when I saw him arrive. I called him "uncle Eddy."
My father took me to the Gein homestead as an adult and showed me where it was and told me some things about Ed.
Of course being local history, I have read the books and seen the movies, but the most chilling part of it all is how "normal" Ed seemed.
My family also knew Eddie Konietski, the man accused of murdering Cad Bates from this same area, a murder many are convinced was also committed by Ed Gein instead.

Ok..maybe I was misinformed as to where they found his mom..I was in my teens when that information was *past on to me *....Ed was a nice man as told by a lot of people who did know him something snapped while living alone and that is when things went bad. He was a good hunter and a survivor and was a brilliant back-woods type man and very interesting.I just hope now that he is gone his sole will be forgiven...He probably did not even know what he was doing at that time.

When all of this was posted, I was a site lurker, yet I never saw it.
I did NOT see the A & E program, I was at my miserable job that I refer to as prison.
Still, as a child, I had a friend who lived so very close to where Ed had. Her parents were married when he/Ed was still there, yet a handful of years after the crime surfaced, she was born (I am 39, she is younger than me by a few years).
When I met the family, I was 10. 1975. And I had not EVER heard his name or about his crime, still I learned fast, in a matter of 2 years or so... and got obsessed with wanting to know more. Call it Wisconsin State History!
Still... I was so close to being able to visit him, as a guest of the former neighbor, who had visiting privilages (bi-weekly), and I swore it was at Mendota. That would have been in 1983, and he died in 1984. By that time, I had read the book by Judge Gollmar, and wanted to meet this person, yet when I drove from Manitowoc County to Madison, I was sick (as in shaking and vomitting) and I chickened out. Big mistake.
Years later, I pretty much lost contact with the family I had stayed with, for a few summer's worth of 4-H exchanges.... yet due to a web search I know they are there.
I only wish I had seen this string of posts back then.... maybe I see things more often now, as for taking the time to join and not lurk? Anyways, I lost this message board site, just a well job done by the administrators... Thanks, guys!

Alot of the people that lived there are mostly all gone now.Your best bet to get information is put a small article in the Plainfield/Almond News Paper or even the Steven's Point Journel...The library in that same area will probably have some archived information also.He lived on BB. When you come to the intersection BB/I39-51 going south from Steven's Point, take a right there and that will take you to his home.I am not sure what his address was. There is nothing left to see other then the land.Oh yes! The Police frequent that area alot for tresspassers and such also!
