I don't see much information on Manitowoc's Evergreen Inn on here... the former Manitowoc Hotel.
As anyone been in there for a walk thru?
Today when driving past, I saw a lot of construction vehicles around, part of the street was blocked off... I guess they are determined to really make something of that building.
The last time I was in there was about 1985 or 1986. A friend was living there, and I used to work down the street, walk there after work and kill time... interesting ppl that used to live there, still, it's been a while (and I lost track of the friend).
Still, I was working down the street at my office the day that the gal had plunged down. Just sad.

Many, many more construction companies have been at this place, the old Manitowoc Hotel -- in the past week.
Still, if you look down the side street, and UP to atleast the 4th level/floor -- a window or two is boarded over, and it looks really strange.
Has anyone else been observing this place over the last few years? Or is it just me? Heck, when we drive past, I still wave to Kathy (Cathy?) -- and wonder if she waves back...
Happy Halloween, everyone!

Do you live in Manitowoc? They are making the hotel into apartments. It is cool that somebody is doing something about such a historic building. I have always thought the building was cool and am thinking about renting one of those apartments. When did this lady jump to her death?

Hi! I am guessing you are from this city, if you are thinking of renting one of those places? Guessing you might be a SLC student, as tons plan to live there? To answer your question: yes, I live in Manitowoc.
and if you do now or will soon... you will live only a few miles away from me. Practically walking distance.
I used to work at the old Heilemann Bakery, It used to be Holsum Bread, bought from the thingy family (it was thingy Brother's Bakery, in the 1930's - 1980, then sold to Heilemann -- as in beer -- bakery, which sold to Metz, and then a few others since moving out of Manitowoc, and then, lastly Sara Lee Bakery.
I used to work at the corporate office. I was the company switchboard operator/receptionist in 1983 - 1986, I was there until almost the end. Loved working there. Had a huge window in front of my office that was right across what is now a Bike shop, as well as the movie theatre. And right next door to what is Premier Coffee shop. What used to be my front window is now the chain link fence with the antique tractors. Right on North 8th Street.
I was working one day and a lady named Cathy or Kathy jumped out the window. She lived in an apt on the 5th or 6th floor. Plunged to her death like a tomato falling off a window sill. I was freshly back from my lunch break. Dead.
For the years I had worked at the bakery, this woman used to walk down the street, guessing she had no car or license. Talked to herself all the time. Stood under the canapy by my office and talked, argued with herself. We made jokes of this, never thought of a "real life Cybil" living in our conservative city.
A few years before that, an old high school buddy of mine had moved there, cheap rent. A friend and I would stop and visit, his name was Todd. He said some of the ppl that lived there were strange, and he moved shortly after. Still he thought it was wonderful, living so close to the bars (and there was a bar below, on the first floor, called Capones) ... walking and getting drunk. Know that he was 19 or 20 at the time, drinking age was 18. And he was like my big brother. I knew this lady from standing in the hall on the 5th or 6th floor, as Todd lived on the same floor. And... she always walked up and down the hall, talking to herself. There was a man there, Eugene. He was a born again Christian. After Cathy/Kathy's death, he still talked to her. Outside on the sidewalk, where she had fell, when she committed suicide. This is on the side street, not on North 8th.
Eugene said, after Kathy/Cathy's death, she had still walked the halls, muttered, and went in her room. No clue to who cleared out her apt back then, I don't think she had family here. Kathy/Cathy was a college graduate, and had managed the Medical Records at Medical Arts/Manitowoc Family Practice, back then. She had a good job. Rumor was that her brains were friend from using drugs.
Still -- this was all 20 years ago. I lost contact with Todd. And when we drive past, I wave. Look up at her window and I wave... wondering if she waves back.
This week I have seen some improvements... I suppose the contractors have been getting a lot of the exterior work done for winter is getting here soon!

Evergreen Inn! Now there is a name you don't hear of often. My uncle Jim used to have a church there. He held Satanic masses there. I am not sure if this is of any intrest to you, but just something to keep in mind.

Satanic Masses there?
Sheesh *rubs eyes*
Tell me more! I am not into that kind of thing, but just like to hear about something like that, out of the normal.
I had a friend who lived there. Down the hall from the gal who committed suicide. And I remember a strange guy there, named Ed. He was a big BIG Bible Thumper. For me being an avid church goer, this guy made me freak out... just due to the way he was. And that would have been about '84-'86, somewhere in there... and I remember some guy, older, looked like a Mad Cuban, always tried to talk to me when a few of us went there to visit this friend of ours who lived there... this guy had no teeth and would try to talk to us, it was hard to understand him. That all seems so long ago...
Alright, J, tell us more, about your uncle and this building...?

There is open house at this place tomorrow, Saturday -- from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
I am determined to go. Just because. And the new and correct name of the place is The Historic Manitowoc Place I think?
I was familiar with the place, in the mid 80's, as a friend lived there. And I worked about 2 blocks away, I guess some of the people who lived there were *Eighth Street Fixtures* if you know what I mean.
And now I will wonder, was the former apt room of Cathy or Kathy, where she plunged to her suicide, done up as any normal room? It was said, that the door still slammed, when no one was around. And the window that she jumped out of was cracked open on occasion.
Sorry for my no participation on this site. I have been back to lurking, and holding my peace. A lot is going on in my life now, it's been a (I did not know it was) "Week to be a pregnant dog" week this week... a few things that had taken place, that have had my blood boiling, and made me come to life and get out the hatchet and swing it.
I almost wish I could turn my life into a Groundhog Day type of thing. Repeat only the best, over and over... like a good day at Walt Disney World, I guess...
carpe diem~

hi! and welcome!!
I had worked so close to there, and was freshly off my lunch break, the day she plunged. I am almost 100% positive it was from the 7th floor, or the 6th, but not the 8th. And it was on the Buffalo side of the building.
I remember the sirens, the ambulance, you name it. It was summer of...1985?
What I remember clear as day was how she used to walk down the street, and stand under the awning of the building I worked at... and smoke a cigarette, and talk to herself. ALOT. She had a conservative and unique look, nothing outlandish, and if you are from this area, I could email you a name of who she looks like (she who is definately alive and kicking!!), you might know who this woman is. Not that it would matter.
I worked at the old Heilemann Bakery, in the corporate office. I was a switchboard operator/receptionist. We always wondered if Kathy/Cathy was one with multiple personalities? We knew nothing.
Long before her death, we heard that she was a *fixture of North 8th*, she did not have a car, she walked everywhere and was a college grad who was burned out from drugs when she was in college. I used to be a patient of Medical Arts/Family practice clinic, near by (now Lakeshore Pediatrics) -- and Kathy was the records manager, I am guessing a somewhat decent job.
I might be able to check with a contact (from the recent construction) on the exact room number, date, etc. if you wish, or steer you in possibly a good direction. let me know...
Due to working on North 8th, I was familiar with a lot of these other statistical type of ppl who lived at the hotel or near by. George. Marie. Woody. Ed. Kathy or Cathy, and so many more...
oh, the memories... and that was all about 19 and 20 years ago...
oh, and Fog, this site has lots on Manitowoc County history. Look for the postings on JFK Prep and Maribel Caves as well. And then there are other places as well... last year I found a new cemetary in the city, and I have been glued to it since...

I remember back in the day whenever I drove by there was a couple people smoking outside of that building but this was about 10 years ago. Ive also read the posts on JFK and ive been there twice. Have you heard about the sanitarioum in White Law. Its a pretty cool old building to go poke around in. Do you know of any other older abandoned buildings around Manitowoc.

Evergreen Inn was and possibly still is a very haunted place. Back in the late 90's when there were still apartments there I had friends that did the cleaning. They had access to some of the off-limit rooms. We spent many hours on the second floor, which was a rec room/bar area at one time. Over the years renters slowly stole alot of the furniture which was sad... Anyways, has anyone experienced the white and red blobs of light there? or the old elevator making the moving sound yet the newer elevator was not moving? Why could you shine a flashlite into the chapel and it reflect off of something so shiney it blinded you...whoever heard of a mirror in a chapel, eh? In those days, if you were into the paranormal and knew someone who lived there, YOU HAD YOUR NIGHT MADE!!!!

I remember the old elevator. The dreary hallways.
Some of the people who hung out in the lobby or outside of the building. One guy in particular was always handing out religious information and looked Saintly like Saint Francis. That was oh-so-80's.
My friend who lived there I have not heard from in years. Web searches get me between WI and CA. And then I wonder what became of some of thoe people's lives?
Still when I drive past, I wave to Cathy or Kathy... they say she is still there. Generally I am friendly... therefore I wave.
