During my 5th grade year (1989-90), my family and I lived in an older home in my old hometown in SW Missouri. We'd bought the house from a couple who'd gotten it via auction after the previous owner had died in the house from AIDS. (We assume that is who was behind the hauntings....I'll get to that now).
Various things happened. The walls and pipes would groan constantly....not like a normal "old house" groan, but like someone was in pain.
The steps on the staircase were old and needed to be replaced; you couldn't walk down a single step without it making a noise (so getting up in the middle of the night for a drink of water would wake up everyone in the house). There were times (especially when I was home alone after school) where it would sound like someone walking up and down the stairs, yet everyone in the house was accounted for.
I had times (again, home alone after school) where someone would knock at the front door, and I'd look out the glass window of the door, and no one was there! This happened about once every couple months or so. Scared me to death.
My mom had the worst experience---twice. In the main bathroom, the toilet would go CLANK before it would flush. Well, one day when she was home doing laundry, she's in the bathroom putting away the towels, when she heard CLANK...she looked over, and watched the toilet handle go down by itself, and flush. She got out of there in a hurry!
The other time with the toilet.....her parents and younger sister were visiting. All the adults were in the living room watching "Rain Man", while my aunt was with my brother and I in the den watching something else. Mom heard CLANK and then heard the toilet flush. She went to investigate, and no one was in the bathroom. Everyone was accounted for in the living room and the den.
We never did find out what caused the haunting, or whatever it was. As much as we loved the old house, we ended up having to sell it in July 1990.....not from the haunting, but because of the financial crunch we were in, from my parents' jobs and the state of the Reagan-Bush economy. So whatever it was........you be the judge.
